About Me and Photography

I started doing photography in the 1980’s after visiting the L.A. Zoo and taking some pictures of the animals. I bought my first 35mm camera (a Nikon) right after that. Those were the days of ‘film’ and I chose shooing color slide film as my medium. Kodachrome, Ektachrome and Fujichrome were my films of choice.

Through the years I’ve been on and off with my photography. Work and other hobbies and activities seemed to take preference for many of the years leading up to retirement. I retired in 2010 and in 2014 I found the Redlands Camera Club (California) and decided to renew my interest in photography.  From 2014 through 2017 I spent a lot of time doing photography. I entered club competitions and taught classes and gave a few seminars on photography equipment. Of the many types of photography one can do, I found myself enjoying nature photography the most.  Macro photography garnered some of my time, however photographing Birds became the area I found myself drawn to. I liked photographing ‘Birds in Flight’ and found the form and character of birds to be more appealing to me when they were captured in flight. Photographing birds in flight, however takes a fast camera and fast lenses, both of which are somewhat expensive.

During those very active years I obtained and used many types of Cameras and Lenses with  Nikon being the predominant equipment line. I also used Canon and Sony equipment as well. At one point I had full sets of Camera and Lenses for Nikon, Canon and Sony. So much equipment that it almost overwhelmed my shooting. After much pondering I decided to pick a single equipment line and give up the excess. I settled on Sony because of their innovative approach to photography equipment and at the time they produced the Fastest camera available. I still shoot the Sony A9 and my main lens is the Sony 100 – 400 f5.6. I also have a smaller Sony A6300 and numerous Sony Lenses. I did retain a Canon EOS 7D and only 1 lens for that Camera which is a Sigma 150-600. The Canon setup provides a long distance capability beyond the Sony equipment.

We moved to Florida in 2018 and I was extremely excited to have access to the many types of aquatic birds found here in Florida. The bird population of Florida was one of my reasons for moving to Florida. Once we arrived in the Villages my life changed and I became involved in so many of the available activities that Photography took a back seat to Golf, Archery and other involvements. Where I was engaged in Photography almost every day,  I now only occasionally venture out to spend a few hours trying to photograph birds and nature.
